I found that my toons were full of water, I got 15 galons from one of the ones in the front, waiting for the next one to drain now. So I realize its no big deal but I pulled the plug out and saw it had a hole in it. I did some research and figured that out and Im wondering if they make a plug with some sort of check valve in it to keep the air from building preasure while keeping the water out.

Re: toon plugs

The hole is to help equalize air pressure adsnd unfortunately it will let water in also.

You need to get a bit of air and a squirt bottle with soapy water and find your leak, 15 gallons is quite a bit of water.

You want 3-5 psi and start spraying everything keep in mind alot of leaks are well above the water line but splash will get the water in the tube, watch the back of the brackets at the rear of the tubes, this is a stress point and often cracks there.

Re: toon plugs

I will guess the plug with a hole in it is in the upper portion of the pontoon?
15 gallons of water via that hole is not very likely. At least it is difficult to imagine, LOL.

You could change the upper vent plug to a hose fitting and run a clear tube up higher.
Like we do on axle vents for running deep water.
They also make a sintered bronze vented pipe plug used to vent air cylinders.
Such as: http://www.mcmaster.com/#vent-plugs/=95oht4

Might keep splashed water out better?

Re: toon plugs

Sorry I forgot to mention that the starbord toon had no plugs at all. the other side had plugs with holes and alot less water but water none the less. I just got the boat and dont know how long it has been since they have been cheked for water but the toons are in pretty good shape and I dont suspect any leaks. I had thought about the hoses in the plugs like we do on our buggys and I think I will most likeley go that rout.

Re: toon plugs

If you got 15 gallons of water out of the tube it absolutely has a leak and no it isn't coming in through the plug.

As I said you should air check the tubes and find the leak and a local weld shop should be able to fix them for a resonable amount.

We have been using the vented plugs at Bennington for a couple years now and haven't had anyone complain about water coming in through the plugs, it has to be a leak.

Re: toon plugs

With no plugs in the tube I wouldn't be surprised to see 15 gallons accumulate there over time, we don't know how long the plugs were out of the tube.

When I put the third tube on my boat I left the vented plugs out of it and with the outside tubes throwing the spray right up on top of it, I had 5 gallons in about 2 hours of hard running. I drained the water out overnight, put the vented plugs back in and haven't heard the slightest slosh in the tube since.

I would drain everything completely, put some new vented plugs in and run the boat. If he has water in after that test run it is definetely time for low pressure testing.
