Are there any special tools that I may need when replacing the seals/gaskets on the lower unit? I ordered a complete seal/gasket kit along with the water pump kit today. I'm just wondering how complex a job I'm getting myself into and how long this may take. Thanks for any advice. I live in Dayton, OH so if anybody is nearby and knows about this job please stop by. I'll get a case of beer for the help and a bottle of whiskey for the weather...although I do have a garage with a kerosene heater...lol...thanks again guys, Skip

Re: Tools...

You need a giant-ass pair of internal snap-ring pliers. The only place I know of to get them are Snap-on (several hundred $$$) or Matco (1/2 the price of Snap-on)

Re: Tools...

You could do the driveshaft, shift rod, drain plug and vent plug without tearing it down.

You should have a seal puller for the driveshaft seal.

You can get the 'O' ring for the shift rod out with a sail needle or a piece of coat hanger wire.

I guess its just one of those things I have to do myself to see if I can actually do it...I envy you because you know exactly what you need to do to complete the job successfully. Its all about trial and error I suppose...lol

Re: Tools...

I'm sorry about that. I didn't read your post closely enough. You don't need the snap-ring pliers to do a deal job. To pull the bearing carrier you will need a special puller or build yourself some long arms for a harmonic balance puller.

Re: Tools... DHadley???

Check the P/L and shop manual, but some J/E LU's can have the prop shaft seals repalced w/o pulling the bearing carrier, which can be a real buster on some saltwater motors. I don't think a harmonic balancer puller will cut it, if you must pull the bearing carrier. I made a special purpose puller for that job on an '85 J 140, which needed new prop shaft seals. It didn't faintly resemble a harmonic balancer or flywheel puller at all.

Maybe Dhadley can illuminate this some more. He's the real expert here.

I'm definitely not an expert, but Walker aint no slouch.

As I said, I'm no expert and maybe Walker's off base here, but he's given me excellent advice over the years, as has Dhadley.

Re: Tools...

I'll probably be giving it a go this weekend...that is if the parts come in on time...I guess I could at least take off what I need....Probably start out by doing the driveshaft, shift rod, drain plug and vent plug so I don't have to tear down everything. Get it pressure tested and see if that fixes the problem. From experience are these seals the most likely problem? Thanks again fellas.

Re: Tools...

So, I've heard these pliers mentioned several times now.

Just how big is gi-****ing-normous, anyway? My local tool perveyor carries the largest set of snap-ring pliers I've ever seen. If I can get some dimensions I'd gladly go take a look and see if they measure up. (getting giddy over the idea of tool shopping already)

Re: Tools...

Are there any good instructions/diagrams for replacing the seals on the lower unit? My manual doesn't really have any pictures on it. Is there a place on the web that might have something like this?

Re: Tools...

The BRP parts catalogs are at this site:

http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E

Navigate to the "products" pick list for "Evinrude", then select the year, horsepower and model number. Finally select Standard Gearcase.

When the diagram comes up, there are four icons above it. The third icon enlarges the diagram.

Once the diagram is enlarged, right click it and save it as a picture for the best results.

The parts lists can be downloaded to Excel.

Once you have an enlarged diagram, you can reference the sections and parts here by the diagram number, such as 46 for the 0-ring seal on the shift rod.

If you want to attach your email address to your user name temporarily, maybe someone could send you some instructions as well.

Re: Tools...

If your manual doesn't show many pictures of the job,the best thing to get is the factory manual.Aftermarket manuals just don't make the cut.

For others, the snap ring pliers (which you don't need for this job) are made by OTC.Last I knew they were only about $135.00.Not a bad price if you have tried to get those snap rings out and back in with other tools.
