I have a 1996 70 hp johnson. I screwed up and put too much oil in my mixture and fowled my plugs. This engine does to have any rich/lean adjustments. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the gas/oil with out removing the gas in the tank.

Best to just siphon the gas out of the tank and get your mixture right; messing with the adjustments isn't going to help much. Good luck

There is no way to "adjust" the fuel/oil ratio on any engine. Once the fuel/oil ratio has been put in the tank-it's set. You could add more fuel (only) to your tank to dilute the current mixture. Just be sure you know how much fuel you really have left in the tank, determine exactly how rich/over-rich you original mixture was-then add raw fuel to get the mixture back to the required 50/1 ratio. FYI, your engine does have an idle mixture screw, adjustable for optimal idling. That adjusts the amount of fuel, not the mixture ratio.

If you know exactly how much extra oil you put into your tank then you could fix it...sorta. If you put twice the amount of oil in than it was suppose to have (instead of 50:1, it would be 25:1 mixture then), you could remove half the tank of oil/gas and add only gas back in to fill it back up to the original level...problem solved... But for this to work correctly you have to know how much more oil you put in... While it won't be exactly a 50:1 mixture, it will be so close as to not matter.

I suppose it depends on how much oil you put in, but just so you know, a rich mixture is one with too much gas/oil to AIR not too much oil to gas.

I doubt the oil is what fouled your plugs but again, I do not know how much oil you put in. If you do, and you have a pretty good estimate of how much gas you originally had, just add some more gas. Make sure you Err on the side of too much oil as opposed to not enough. A little more oil usually doesn't hurt a motor or its plugs. The lake and environment do not appreciate it but the motors usually thank you.
