hi all! first post here so sorry if this may be in the wrong section...i owned an outboard before my recent purchase of a 78 sea ray srv 190 with a merc. 351-233hp

the problem im having is when i go to put it in gear, forward or reverse(reverse seems worse) its throttling up before its completely in gear, so its like if im in gear, im going lol..id like to be able to put it in gear and just have the engine at idle ..im thinking its a simple linkage adjustment but i thought some of u could give me some direction...thanks!

Re: too much throttle putting in gear?

Could be a stretched shift cable especially if it is the original one, 34 years is a pretty good service life.

You really want to get this fixxed before you run the boat alot, the gears really really don't like sudden impacts like slamming in gear, it will crack the gears and they will eventually fail, there is a reason I know that.

I am not the IO guru spait for someone else to chime in but the cable seems the obvious place to start, you can adjust out some wear but if it is going both ways it is probably the cable.

Idle too high? Should be around 800 rpm

Re: too much throttle putting in gear?

heres a pic with the cables numbered...im pretty sure #2 and 3 are the cables which put the boat into forward and reverse, and #1 is the throttle cable, im sure whoever can give me an exact answer knows exactly what these cables do but i numbered them so it can be explained easier...thanks!

Re: too much throttle putting in gear?

and again, its not like it doesnt idle, just when i put it in gear it gives the engine gas before its fully in gear...so i can idle but once the lever is pushed forward just to get it in gear its getting throttle..so i cant idle in gear, if that makes any sense...

Re: too much throttle putting in gear?

Your cables are out of adjustment. The shift lever should come to a complete stop before the throttle cables starts to move.

There is a specific procedure for adjusting them. Get a manual and follow directions to the tee. It doesn’t take much ”adjustment” to get them really messed up.
