Too much smoke

I have a Johnson tiller, 25hp 1996 Johnson O/B, 2 stroke.
It smokes really bad when idling and there is excessive oil in the water tub. It also burns about 3 times the amount of fuel it should. It seems to run pretty good otherwise. I have even leaned the fuel mix out some to see if it helped but it did not.
I am wondering if this may be a symptom of worn rings and a soon to be bad motor.
Any thoughts?

compression test will help determine what is going on with rings

are you pre-mix or does this motor have an oil injection pump?

what oil are you running?

new to you motor or something you have owned for a while?

What is the history of the motor?

what maintenance have you done?

That's a 26 year oldie motor, if always have burned 50:1 fuel/oil ratio thru its entire life that motor needs a desperate and urgent full decarbon process. Buy a can of :
CRC Decarbonizer.jpg

Follow instructions and squirt at least 1/2 can contents thru the carb in small intervals for the motor not to die when squirting too much, once done take the combo for a wot run for at least 10 minutes as if stealing it for the product to be fully burned. Motor should smoke as used to before and purr as a kitten when at idle...

is this a new problem that came up recently ?
how is the smoke... bug killer/repellent like or.... steam like
Compression test is critical test to do !

what is 3 times the fuel consumption ??

what oil do you use....cheapy stuff or good stuff ?

a carbed 25 should at least do about 2hr max rpms on a 6 us gal tank.

are you burning 18 gals in 2 hours ?

my 50 merc Classic whould do about 1 hour max speed pulling skiers So I figure a 25hp should do 2 hours approx.

Get it out of that tub and on a boat on the lake where it was designed to run, and run the p--- out of it. You may find it will be much cleaner.

Check if your carb is flooding. Had the same problem of excessive smoke/fuel consumption; fixing stuck float cured it.
