I have a 61 seamaid 16ft aluminum with a 50 hp mercury. the boat tops out at an estimated 15-20 mph. is this normal or should it be faster indicating some problem. also would an 85 hp be to much for this boat to handle both in terms of weight of the motor and its power?

Re: too much power?

Seems like it should be faster, but need motor rpm and gps speed at WOT to tell anything acurately. Estimated just doesn't work. You only need to look at the capacity plate to find out the max hp for your boat. 85hp sounds high. Again, estimating don't work.

Re: too much power?

Welcome to iboats. That boat is too narrow and will not accept more that 60 HP by USCG standards. The 85 will be too heavy and too powerful........ it could be a deathtrap.
