Hi all,
I am having issues with my 40hp 2-stroke oil injected merc. I cannot start it up as it seems to be flooding really easily. When i keep turning it, it does not take long at all for the oil/fuel mixture to start running from the exhaust drain hole. And it is running in copious amounts.
Something that catches my attention more so is the substantial amount of oil in this mix. The stuff coming out is very much black and I would say it looks to be half oil/half fuel.
I can only think of two things which might be happening.
1. The black in the unburnt fuel is residue which is being lifted off the exhaust area as the fuel passes through. SO if this was possibly happening there would be no problem with the mix but there would be other reasons why the motor is not kicking over.
2. This is what I think might be happening. There is too much oil being injected into the mixture and so the mixture is too rich with oil to be ignited and combusted.
Of course its possible there is another issue and its normal for a large amount of oil to come out with the unburnt fuel when its flooded and im trying to kick it over. I am fairly new to boats so im not entirely sure what the right amount is. However, common sense and having used normal (pre-mixed fuel) outboards before tells me there is too much in the mix coming out..
I also only just got it back from a service. It was running only on 2 cylinders and the mechanic replaced on of the CDM modules and said he ran it for ages in the shop and it was running OK. I would be back on the phone to him but at this point I would rather another opinion and keep my cool cos if i talked to him and he told me it was running fine again i think i would arc up a bit.
