Hi everyone I know this post isn’t solely outboard related but I just picked up this aluminum boat here along with a 6hp evinrude. The title says it’s a 1969 12ft valco. the boat only measures about 11ft. The vin tag had been removed at some point so I have no idea of knowing what the max Hp is for a boat like this. Looks more like a game fisher to me. Any know what kind of boat this is? I’m wondering if I could run a 1972 9.5 evinrude on it.

Looking at the Chine, I wouldn't put more than the 6 that was on it. Go too fast with that hull, and she will trip and flip in a turn

I had a 10-11' Alumacraft semi v rounded chines and ran a 5 1/2 Johnson on it......slow and sluggish. I sold it and later bought another boat. It was a 10' "Lake John" built by a popular aluminum boat mfgr......just remembered and edited: Lowe brand. I ran a Merc 7 1/2 on it and it was a good match but I felt that a 9.8 would be just right....make it fast when I had long runs to make. I was financially investing in a family at the time and didn't have the funds to upgrade. With 2 people and gear, I never felt challenged with that boat.

Another point, a friend had a 13-14' Alumacraft hull, semi v, rounded chines, similar to your boat with a side console just forward of the rear seat on the right side running a 33 hp Evinrude. Nice combination.

HTH.

Do you think a 1985 8hp evinrude would be any better? It weighs 56 pounds and the 6hp I have weighs 51. I got about 11mph with the 6hp but this was only after I added weight to the front before I did that it was only running 8mph. It ran great with the 6hp didn’t seems like too much motor at all if anything it could use a little more.

Would a 8hp also be okay? It only weighs 5 more pounds than the 6. My only worry is overpowering the boat. Definitely don’t want to loose the motor or flip the boat somehow.

Scott, and myself, have both recommended engines of 6 hp or less as max. However, you are free to put something bigger on if you want.
I've seen people put 25 hp on boats like that. Not very smart, but they did it. I don't know what happened afterwards...

Well thank you both. I think I’ll try an 8hp see how it goes and go from there. If anything I’ll just end up using the 6hp. Wouldn’t even think about putting a 25 on it lol. I’ll update Everyone after the testing this week. Thanks

The turtle 9.5 is low compression and runs like a 6 anyways, well at least mine did.

All these outboards are Low Compression, most were in the 5.5:1 range, some a bit lower

1969 vintage boat would not have a HIN/VIN, since that numbering system was introduced in 1972. Just a serial # tag of some sort, but maybe that's what's gone.

I run a 7.5 HP Merc on my 8 ft pram, (but don't tell anybody :ROFLMAO: )

The 9.5 HP should be fine . . . even though it is over the calculated spec. . . set the throttle stop lower (if you can) if you are worried about it.

If you did that....something stupid.....I sincerely doubt that the 2 HP difference would be the deciding factor!
