I have a 84 Johnson 70 hp and I think it is running rich. When idling it is popping fuel out of the carbs and puddling up a bit in the carb body. It is also sluggish when I give it gas, there are no adjustments on these carbs.I was wondering if I need to make a afloat adjustment or a a timing adjustment? Thanks.

are you running it on the water or on muffs ? check compression and a good spark on all 3 cylinders . did you try cleaning out the carb bowls and high speed jets ? any air leaks ?

Re: Too much fuel?

If you have not done anything so far I would start with the fuel system. Rebuild the carbs and put in new floats.

It has 118lbs compression on all 3 cylinders, new plugs,I just cleaned the carbs.I checked the spark with one of those inline spark testers and replaced the fuel lines.Just a question, how do I know if I need new floats or should I just change them?I am running the motor in a 55 gallon barrel.thanks.

Re: Too much fuel?

When I rebuilt my carbs this spring I weighed the old floats with my reloading scale. I didn't know what they were supposed to weigh but they were about 20% different from each other (three carbs). I bought new ones and weighed them. The new ones were from 20% to 40% lighter than the old ones. I don't know if I am right or wrong but I just thought From the weight difference the old ones had soaked up some fuel. The old ones were some kind of foam amd the new ones seem to be a harder plastic. Anyway I don't have any excess fuel now. Of course I also replaced the float valves and seats so maybe I wasted a few bucks on the floats as they were about $8 each.. Don't care, everything works great now.

edit: I did save the old floats and they are sitting out in the garage on a shelf. Thought I would let them sit for a few months and see if they get lighter. If they do I will know they had some fuel soaked up in them.

You don't need to replace floats unless they are fuel soaked (composite) or leaking (brass). Float levels need to be adjusted properly. Setting them too high causes flooding -- setting them too low causes lean operation.
