Too much compression ?

Hi all, I know it is contrary to the normal compression topics but I seem to be getting too much compression on my motor. It is a 2000 tohatsu 90 which I rebuilt. The powerhead was stripped to check the bearings, block etc and all were excellent. I took off the piston rings to clean out the slots and they were fine too , all rings went back into original position, as did pistons. All went back together and started 2nd pull on the manual starter, beauty I thought. It didn't seem too hard to pull start. Got the electrics connected and the start motor mounted which was in good nick too. Tried it but it couldn't turn the engine over. MAybe got it do do 1 rev very slowly , it would slow/stop on each compression. Checked the compression on each cylinder. All were showing between 125- 130 psi in each cylinder. According to the service manual it should be 116 psi. I have had the motor running in a tank for 30 min + on idle and it seems to be very good. the starter just can't turn it and i don't think it is the starters fault.

Re: Too much compression ?

sounds like electrical problem , check condition of battery and connections of cables,how/where is grounded cable hooked i.e. to block or directly onto starter housing. what I'm getting at is a poor ground. Try grounding directly to starter housing.

The compression doesn't seem too high. You can try to pull the sparkplugs and see if it will turn over. You may have pulled some water into the cylinders when you shut it down. Also fuel could have leaked into the cylinders and hydro locked it. This could happen if there is a problem with the carb. Check what comes out of the plug holes if anything.

Sorry, I didn't read that you could turn it over with the manual cord.

Hi, nothing comes out of the plugs when turned over, the starter turns it freely without any plugs. Fine with 1 plug, thats how i got the psi readings. 2 it slows and struggles with 3. I will check the grounding tonight.

Rgds and thanks
Al

Sounds like it could possibly be the ignition timing is too far advanced? Maybe a stator link to the trottle is incorrect?

An easy way to check is leave all the plugs in but leave the plug wires off and see if it turns over easier.

Re: Too much compression ?

Sorted, The problem was the jumper leads I was using to connect the battery to the engine. They were crap. Wondered why the lead was getting warm. Bought a few meters of 200Amp auto cable from local repco and used them to connect the battery. Starter spins engine easily. had a look at the jumper cables, they look thick but it is mostly insulation with a small core of copper. Quite misleading really.

Some compression gauges seem to not agree with others which can make comparisons interesting. Consistent readings between cylinders can still be easily determined which is probably even more important anyhow.
