Factory impellers can be trusted as far as quality is concerned !

Re: too many impeller choices

thanks, I'm sure any impeller will be better than the one I have now. the Mallory and sierra are sold here at iboats store, the oem I found on a different site. figured its probably like a best oil question:rolleyes:, but figured it cant hurt to ask and hear some opinions, before ordering:D

You should be replacing the impeller every two years and any of them will last that long. The cost of replacing an impeller is way less than than replacing the motor due to overheat and seizure.

I have a box full of brand new Sierra impellers that says otherwise ;)

I have had to put OEM impellers in over 25 motors that had brand new Sierra impellers in them that failed within a few outings. The hubs separated or the key ground a groove in the hub, rendering them useless. I stick with OEM for such a critical item. Just my 2 cents.

Funny, I've used Sierra ever since there was a Sierra and rarely seen a problem. Y'all must think that the OEM's actually make their own impellers. It's all outsourced to whoever gives the cheapest price.

Half true. While cost does play an important factor in their outsourcing, quality is higher.

I have not really heard of an OEM impeller failing on startup? I haven't encountered it anyways. Doesn't say a lot, I haven't done as many as some of the large scale mechanics on this site, but in my tiny little world all has been well.

Google search failed Sierra impellers and pour yourself a cup of coffee :)

I am not trying to drag Sierra through the mud. I have an account with them and buy many, many of their products. Impellers are not one of them however. They may have improved the quality standards over the last couple years, but I am confident in the OEM impellers so stick with them. Would I put one of their impellers in one of my own motors? Maybe, but not in someone that pays me to do a water pump job. I wouldn't want a failure to be blamed on me. They are not always that much more cost wise. Well worth the extra investment in my tiny little brain. Your water pump is a pretty critical aspect of the outboards operation right.

Wasn't exaggerating on the number of failed ones I have pulled out either. Ill go take a picture of them all. Brand new each one. Most had the hub separate from the rubber, but about a third had the key tear a groove in the hub. Strange to see indeed.

I have always believed in factory OEM. However, I have given the after market a try (with a close eye) when the difference in price is $150. You don't have the sorta ratio with an impeller.

I don't think I will get the sierra, the other choice here at iboats is Mallory. there where some small pieces that fell out when I took it apart, but I'm not sure if it was all of it:confused:
