Tohatsu won't trim out

Hey guys, I have a 115 Tohatsu and I love it. It is on a 20/72 F & F Modified V aluminum johnboat. I have a ballistic 17 pitch prop.

I used it all summer at the lake skiing and tubing and it would trim out perfectly and would run about 46mph loaded.

In october while fishing on Reelfoot lake I got hung on a stump. When it came off, the stump was in the middle of the motor and broke off about a 3.5 inch piece from the front of the cavitation plate and bent the prop.

I replaced the prop and took it out the other day. It revved the right rpms at WOT but would only go 38 mph and would not trim out. The front of the boat would not lift off of the water. I went to my Tohat dealer and he called the company. He says that the small piece that is broken is allowing water to slip by and is causing it to not trim out and lift the bow.

Cost to replace the housing on the lower unit was quoted at about $950.

Could this be right or do I need to take the motor for a second opinion. Too much money to wonder.

Please help

Post an image of the damage....And your insurance should pick up the damage.

Re: Tohatsu won't trim out

Fight with insurance, but that is another story.

Haven't made pics yet, but here is a new possibility. My motor will trim up fine running 3500 rpms, and will trim up until it starts porpoising. When my rpms go up to max, it will only trim so far. Will stop trimming just at about the point the bow should lift, but the boat drags water from front to back.

Its like the trim motor just quits just shy of the right spot. It should just keep on going shouldn't it. It works fine when under low rpms or out of the water. Trim makes noise often going up and down (pops and creaks)

Sounds like damage somewhere in the system. No load/no problem. Has load/has problem. Could be a problem on the tilt side of the unit rather than the trim side.
