Hi, I have a 2007 Tohatsu 15hp Model # mfs 15b2 and serial # 033666xg that I bought new. After running for about seven hours it became harder and harder to shift, After running for about ten hours it is imposable to shift. I loosened the bracket that holds it in gear and it made no difference. This motor is just like new with only about ten hours on it and I can't figure out why it is not shifting. If anyone has a idea on this problem all input would be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your time. Bruce.

Re: Tohatsu won't shift

Is the motor presently stuck in gear? Unlikely possibility, but if the neutral safety cable is out of adjustment, the linkage could possibly be stuck in gear.

I have also seen one of these where the front shifter linkage rod was bent, keeping the motor from having full travel to the shifter. Debris had jammed the lower shift rod linkage, and then the front shifter was forced aft. Essentially, the user aggressively tried to shift to R, bending the rod. At that point, the motor was only in F, so the neutral lockout prevented starting, and the shifter seemed stuck.

Keep in mind that the motor must be running (driveshaft turning) in order to shift from neutral to gear (either F or R).

If all seems adjusted properly, it's time for dealer service under warranty.
