Tohatsu Trim problems...

I have a 1997 50 HP Tohatsu short shaft (20") that has had a problem with the trim almost from the start. I took the motor to the tech while still under warranty, but no good. I took it back three more times,(all warrantied), but still no good. The trim will work, but it is VERY slow to move up, especially the first time that you try to trim it up to take the motor toter off the motor. It will go down fine but try to trim it up and all you hear is the trim motor and only a small amount of movement. After you trim it up and down a few times it seems to work better, but it is still sluggish. I have had the complete power tilt and trim system rebuilt 2 times, all fluid levels are full to specs, and the battery is fully charged. Is there any type of check valve that could have been messed up? I have heard the tech speak of the "check valve assembly" on more than one occasion and I am wondering if maybe it has been damaged and he just doesnt want to admit it.

The boat is sort of like a spare that I fish in small rivers and private lakes with, but I like to know that if the Skeeter has to stay home, the Alumicraft will get me to the fishing spots and back.

Thanks in advance,
BK

Re: Tohatsu Trim problems...

If it makes you feel any better my 2003 40hp is the same way. After the first time you raise it, it works fine until the next day you try it. I kind of thought the oil being so cold had something to do with it since I have only had mine this winter and haven't used it in warm weather yet.

BTW-A short shaft is 15" ;)

Do they raise and lower manually with the release open? Have you done the bleed and top off sequence? I believe the Nissan and Tohatsu Web sites have instructions on bleeding, if not I'll dig out the manual.
