Hello , I own a Tohatsu TLDI 50 , year 2009 with 50 hrs on it.
A few weeks ago it broke down on the lake :( ( battery dead )
I installed a new battery , checked the cables on corrosion : everything ok .
The battery is 950 A , 100Ah.
My question : when i start the engine it gives more than 14 v to the battery , after a few seconds ( i see 14 , 5 V on my external meter ) it drops to 12,4 V .
i expect than it keeps givin 14 V ?

When i unplug the rectifer (without battery ) , it gives me 15 V .

Remark : the engines runs great for the moment , lots of power and low of fuel consumption . The ECU gives no error messages .

I hope that a Tohatsu owner/specialist can help me because i am scared breaking down again ..

Greetings from Belgium

Welcome to Iboats,

Check Owners Manual, probably your bat is low rated, factory probably recommends a higher amp bat for LTDI OB's.

Happy Boating

Full charge on a "12v" flooded battery is about 13.2v. Any charging source will go above that to "squeeze" a charge into the battery. 14 or 15v is not uncommon. As the battery charges, the rate should drop, eventually stabilizing at about 13v. Running the rectifier/regulator without a load can eventually cause it to burn up, so don't do that.

Many meters are a little off, so don't necessarily take your readings as gospel.

TLDI motors require 1000 cca, so you will likely need a group-31 battery. If you have 100 AH, you probably only have a group-27 or smaller battery.
