Tohatsu TLDI--I thought that they'd figure this out by now...

Now this needs to be prefaced that I'm just a dumb doctor. However, I'd think that if one were a dealer for only two manufacturers of engines that one would likely get to know the specific requirements for those engines when performing a clean installation...

My Tohatsu 50hp TLDI requires a higher-rated battery to run the TLDI system. In colder climates, and I'm thinking that my state of Alaska qualifies, it requires an even higher MCA and AH rating (120AH and 850CCA).

Now, if the folks putting these zodiacs together and placing the engines on board have been trained...why did I get a battery with only 650CCA???

Last week I was returning from a five day hunt in the middle of nowhere only to experience the three warning lights that blinked on occasion without any rhyme or reason...as well, my fuel consumption SUCKED! Getting home at under 2500rpms for over five hours was a miserable experience on a BRAND-NEW motor, having less than 100hrs...

I went out on a short excursion yesterday right outside the marina where there were plenty of other boats around. Within five minutes the problem resurfaced and helped to define itself. At about 2800rpms and up to 3400rpms the three warning lights started blinking erratically. They frustrated me until I looked under the lid of the battery box--BINGO 650CC and the temp down on the water was only about 40F...This little battery was being tested to its max capacity and coming up short!

I've placed one call to the service department but they did not get back to me yet...I'm going to get in touch with them tomorrow and get them to correct their mistake--we'll see if this "magically" corrects the problem!

Go bigger...1000CCA. Cold, age of battery and resistance in the wires will weigh against you.

you mean the motor doesn't generate enough power to run itself and keep the battery charged? doesn't sound like the motor i'd be running out to the middle of nowhere.

"you mean the motor doesn't generate enough power to run itself and keep the battery charged?"

That is not what anyone has said or meant. LIke Mercury Optimax and Yamaha HPDI, Tohatsu TLDI models require a high level of amps to S-T-A-R-T.
