I have a 2002 Tohastsu TLDI 70hp outboard. I have had this unit since new. When I purchased it I was told that the 2 stroke oil consumption would be high until it was run in. After many hours of use this motor is still consuming TWICE as much oil as it should be and the motor is very smoky at idle revs. I believe that the oil should be mixing with the fuel at a rate of 50:1 but it is using oil at a rate of in excess of 25:1. My Tohatsu dealer has stated that this is within the manufacturers tolerances, but I'm not convinced. Has anyone else dealt with this problem or have any ideas on related problems which may provide an answer.

Your dealer is full of it. Take it to a different dealer. Based on what you have said, it is obvious that the dealer who set it up did not know what they were doing.

Slight diversion here, Internet, if these engines need dealer set-up how does that get handled when somebody buys one from a web dealer?

That's a good question...and the answer is....You can not buy a TLDI engine, 4-stroke engine above 25HP or any remote model engine from a dealer unless that dealer or another authorized dealer does the install. It really cut into our sales when they started that little rule on the remotes last year, but it has always been that way on TLDI's. Oddly enough we still sell two or three of those models each month that we ship to some dealer in the customers home area. Some dealers tell people to take a hike when they are asked if they will PDI one. Some, look at it as additional service work and do not mind doing it.

The TLDI's are a little picky on the set up and unless you know how to do it...it will run...just not correctly.

Took my boat down to the dealer to have the TLDi 90 be put on. We had a little chitchat about different outboard and setup.

He commented on the earlier TLDi had cpu problem, some (a very small number of) TLDi had mapping trouble and wouldn't some off the run in mode. These were the 'A' engine and the later ones are all fixed and these are known as 'B'.

Not sure if it's true or not.

The A model was the first series put out. The B model was just the last series that was released. There were around six changes to the B model. One of which was a different control module. I think there were three or four that were replaced under warranty in the U.S.
