I'm not sure how much of this info carries forward to the later model 50's, but it was a good read and filled in some gaps for me. http://www.boatpoint.com.au/engine-reviews/2000/tohatsu-tldi-50-8163

I had a 40 on order, then it hit backorder, and today the dealer is upgrading me to an available 50 instead, at almost no charge. Pretty excited about this, should have it in under a week.

Tiller, TnT, elec start, short shaft... sweet !

Re: Tohatsu TLDI 50hp coming!

Thought I would report back...got the boat back Friday evening with the new 50 tiller installed, went for test ride alone. Short story is I absolutely love it ! I ran about 27 miles via gps and burned 2.5 gal gas.

Then Saturday and Sunday a friend and I ran it all weekend getting to/from our turkey hunting areas in the bayous and woods. It runs very good, and I'm very satisfied with my choice. Lots of our time was spent crawling thru stumpy bayous at idle speed. Trimmed up a bit, the engine never stuttered. I was worried about sliding over logs with a trim/tilt motor, all my previous (Ive had a bunch) were manuals, and simply rode over the obstruction. This time I would just time it, give it some light throttle, then trim out almost out the water for a second while the log cleared the foot.

One change I'm making is installing a 2nd trim/tilt button setup on the bench seat down where my right hand usually rests. A few dealers have told me this is pretty handy and easy to do. At this time I'm not sure if the orig switch on the handle box will continue to be functional. ?

One small issue I'm learning is the gas tank pump bulb from the 6gal tank. When I kill the motor for about 15-30 min, it seems all the gas drains out the bulb and its soft again. I didn't expect to have to reprime so often, and I'm very careful not to overdo it until I learn what the motor wants. I mostly leave the tank cap vent open all the time This has caused some startup issues where it cranks and kills for a bit until it gets the gas going. I've never had an EFI motor before so I'm being conservative for now. What happens if I overdo the fuel line bulb? Can that even happen with EFI ? Will it flood like a carb motor?

If your primer is hard at shutdown, and soft a little later, there has been a leak. Either the check valves in the bulb, or elsewhere. Worth mentioning to the dealer. The DFI should not require constant pumping of the bulb.

Congrats on the new motor. I just bought the same one (2011 TLDI 50 tiller) and am a little dissappointed in my performance. I have a 1552 semi-v Alweld. Boat hull weighs 350 lbs, have 6 gal tank and one batt in back, one batt in front and troll motor. I keep my anchor and cooler in front for wight distribution. Motor is mounted with cav plate about 1.5" above bottom of boat. No cavitation problems. I am getting about 35 mph on gps (with one,two or three people same speed just more trim angle) with factory 11" X 15" pitch alum prop. I tried a Powertech SCB 10.38" X 15" pitch prop and it killed my low end and became very weight sensitive but ran about 36-37 mph with a very light load(just me). I am exchanging this prop for a Powertech SCA 11" X 13" pitch prop in hopes of better overall performance. I was wondering what prop you are running and what performance you get and what model/size your boat is? Also, do you have porpoising problems with your aliminum boat and this motor? I sure do unless I bend the trim tabs down, but then I get spray all over the place from the trim tabs. I was just curious how your set up works. Thanks in advance if you reply.
