Re: tohatsu shifting problems

When you put the engine in forward gear the prop turns one way and in reverse it turns the other way. So, if the engine is not running and you are trying to turn the prop while the engine is in gear....It will lock one way and when the engine is shifted into the other gear it will lock the other way. I'm assuming that Fishbone 1 is doing this with the engine not running. If this problem is occuring with the engine running then the clutch and forward gear are shot.

The forward gear and clutch are torn up or it could just be way out of adjustment.

Re: tohatsu shifting problems

Fishbone, a few years back I posted a similar problem and fix. I had a burr that would catch and not allow shifting. You can shift into reverse because the shift lever supplies the force to the dog, when shifting forward, the shift releases pressure and a spring pushes the shift shaft back. In my case, the spring was not strong enough to push the ball over the burr. I know this explanation is de-void of most of the proper names for the parts, but I don't have my manual with me and forgot them. Do a search for Salmon Tub and you should find the previous post. I will do so now as well.

Good luck.
