I am gathering all the parts and pieces to install this 2020 9.8 tohatsu on my boat and change it to a remote controlled one. The motor will come in this Tuesday and the remote control conversion parts are in the crate. I ordered a Panther 4 stroke 16 inch travel outboard bracket and a Tiny Tach to keep an eye on RPMs. I did not yet order a remote control box or cables, mostly because I am not sure whether I absolutely need a Tohatsu box or if I can make do with a generic one. I worry about alarms in the remote and the proper hookup to the proper parts
The question is very simple. Do I need the tohatsu remote control box at almost $400 or can can I go with a generic box.
I highly appreciate your opinions and advice about this matter.
Thank you,Cornelis.

Any RC box that uses standard Morse cables will give you throttle and shift, but as always, for all manufacturers, the electric bits are manufacturer specific. So, for low oil alarm, push-to-choke, and starting and stopping with the key, you will want an OEM RC box. You do know that the Remote 9.8 uses a completely different carb from the Tiller version, right? Will you be changing that as well?

Thanks for that advice. I will bite that bullet and order a tohatsu remote control. As for the carb, do you by any chance know the part # for that carb?. The only 9.8 with a remote control setup that I could find was one with an extra long shaft. and although attractively priced, It was not what I really want.Anyway that is water under the bridge.
Thank you for your sound advice.

This is setup for electric choke. The F type choke plate turns the other way.
You would also need the solenoid, bracket, plunger, and a few other bits.
