Re: TOHATSU OUTBOARDS

Tohatsu engines (and Nissan, which are rebadged Tohatsus) have an excellent reputation for reliability.

I don't remember ever getting a request for help with a Tohatsu problem here. That must cover several hundred thousand troubles.

the only parts we've been able to sell for 'em has been spark plugs-impellers-and zincs ! oh, and the occasional prop...worn out from grinding thru the oyster beds...but they will take a licking and run-run-run

I can't tell you about the 6hp 4-stroke, but I have an 8hp 2-stroke kicker that just won't quit! This is the strongest, most reliable motor I've ever seen. All I've ever needed is new plugs and a minor carb adjustment.

I bought a 6 HP 4 cycle Tohatsu spring of 2002 and used it for trolling on a salmon fishing trip to ME last June for a week. I put about 60 to 70 hrs on the motor and it would run flawlessly for 10 to 12 hrs/day trolling. Never had a moments problem with it, ran quietly and started easily. What more could you want.

Re: TOHATSU OUTBOARDS

I got the 6hp 4 stroke and troll just above idle for 6-8 hr days. Plugs are hard to find, no one can get the zinc. First year with it, so time will tell. It is identical to the four stroke mercury--just several hundred dollars cheaper. I believe your right crabbait everyone shares the jap 4 stroke technology in this size motor. Local merc. shop said I was nuts, I told them not to worry and just order the **** zinc for a 4 stroke merc--not available! nor was the plug! Went back to Cabelas (were I bought it) and they did not have the plug on the shelf--but did talk the service dept. into selling me a couple! I fish every weekend and have yet to burn through a complete 3 gal gas tank!

Re: TOHATSU OUTBOARDS

we bought a 8hp 2 cycle nissan two years ago and have run it wide open time and time again and our sixteen year old has put it through the tests and we have not had one problem. we keep it serviced, washed and clean and it looks as good as the day we bought it. We are looking at getting a 20 plus hp nissan for the same boat as the 8hp is not able to bring the boat to plane speed. Anyway, I find the motor to be very reliable and it pushes the boat as it did the first day it came out of the box.

Re: TOHATSU OUTBOARDS

To bump another old post to the top, if I can get a Tohatsu for the same price as a Nissan, is there an advantage of buying one instead of the other? They both appear to be the same engine, except for colors and decals.
