so I picked up a mfs6c 2013 I think off craigslist for $400... seemed to be a killer deal! from what i see they go for 800-1300?
anyways, upon further inspection.. I noticed the prop had oil leaking around it. so i started reading horror stories online...
well i have found a couple reasons.. fishing line damaging the seals, or it laying down wrong and getting oil in bad places?
the engine looks and feels NEW! so today i took off the prop and no line. put a bike pump in gear box to check pressure. seemed to hold for my diy job.
the gear oil was sort of greyish clear. thin viscosity (which so is new oil). and smelled pretty bad. no milky stuff and held pressure pretty good..

anyone think i have a seal leak? or minor leak???

ALSO! the oil leaking... it had a thin film of oil all over the engine and the plugs where black. i shined a light in the cylinder head and it was pretty black and gross.
my car friend said its a bad gasket. I THINK it is from improper storing or transport. also i read winterizing you spray oil in it. are these valid assumptions? the light blinks when pulled but i dont have fuel. i figured when started it would be steady? is this true??

anybody own one that has had similar experiences? or can test the light with no fuel???
THANKS in advance!!!

noob to 4 strokes...

If the gear case holds pressure, it's probably not leaking. I would change oils, get new plugs, and fire it up for a test (in water of course).

What Paul said! And as far the blinking oil light, on these motors, the oil light will blink when first started as the oil pressure builds up. Once the oil pressure is up to snuff (just a few seconds), the light goes off. If it comes back on, you have a problem. In other words, you may see it blink for a few seconds upon start up, but after that it should go off and stay off.

DL a copy of your owners manual from tohatsu.com for more info.

I did that. It's great for maintenance but not repairs. It just says take to your local dealer

Owner manuals are for operation...Service manuals are for servicing and repairs. You would need to purchase a service manual from a dealer as though are not available as a download.

Thank you. That is straight forward. I need to find one to buy. In cars, there are 2-3 manuals. Is it this way? Which is the best? Thanks

Forget the aftermarket manuals; get a Factory service manual:

Thank you for the response. I found out later I was running too much oil and fouled the plugs a little. Less oil/ new plugs. It runs great now!

As for gear case oil. I haven't seen any extra oil anywhere after doing what I just mentioned. I think gear oil was just old and gross. So far so good
