I've got one of the Tohatsu 6hp 4-strokes, a 2014 model I think. Bought new in 2015. There have been many small issue with it, to be honest, but I on the whole it has kept working. Very worrying is an intermittent noise. Sometimes it's the faintest of squeaks, other times a very loud metal-on-metal kind of squeal, always in time with the piston strokes. Hard to tell where the sound is coming from exactly. When it's at its loudest, there is a small drop in engine rpms as well. Sometimes it persists for minutes, other times it will stop suddenly. Often, stopping and immediately restarting the engine will stop the sound.
I'm thinking it can only be a lack of lubrication (I have checked and changed oil) if it's in the powerhead, or a failing bearing if it's lower down. I'm a long way from a dealer or workshop, so I'll have to do the work myself, but would appreciate any ideas that could save time and money (knowing what gaskets or parts to order in advance, for example).
