Tohatsu MFS15C questions, oil overfill from local seller.

Right, so finally I found this great forum. I have been lurking around for a while, enjoying all knowledge here.

But I have a couple of questions I cant seem to find the answer to..

Two weeks ago may 18th I bought a brand new Tohatsu MFS15C from an authorized dealer locally. Since it was Saturday I got to hang out in the workshop with the tech and sales guy during the setup of my engine. They overfilled the crank case oil and I assisted in draining some oil out, by holding the engine somewhat tilted when unplugging the oil plug.

Both the tech and sales guy looked at the dip stick and concluded "within spec". All fine and I got the motor in my car, went home and mounted it on my boat. A couple of days later (after about 4hrs in total of the break in routine) I checked the oil and noticed that it was still overfilled. I siphoned out 230mL (0,25 quart (?!))to get DOWN to the maximum level.

I contacted the tech department of Tohatsu's nordic importer Loxkel and asked for their opinion before I confronted the seller. According to them and given the circumstances with 4hrs break in, they did not think that it would be a problem.. BUT that I definately should contact the seller and tell them about their mistake. Which I did, and ended up with a lot of strange explanations/excuses and blah blah in a rather non-pleasant manner. Please note, I was not rude or unpolite in any way, just concerned.

The motor is running fine, and I cant see anything wrong with it, but should I be worried? Have been reading about some very serious breakdowns due to over fill..

It's common to overfill, and get a "good" (midway) reading on the dipstick shortly after adding oil. That's because it takes a couple of minutes before all the oil dumped into the valve cover makes its way down to the sump. Not to worry. If your stick shows midway now, you should be fine.

Thanks pvanv for the reply, but the problem was that it was overfilled over the "MAX" level with 230mL.

That makes 1230mL in total volume in the crankcase. Now it is at the upper mark, at "MAX" after i took out the excess 230mL. Should I take out more to get it "half way" between min and max?

Thanks JB!

I read about the great post?"making oil" but do you really think it made 230mL oil in 4 hours? Total amount gas burned is about 8L.

In that case, it would make about 100% extra in 16hours, is that possible?

I will check the oil level again next time since it was now at the max-level when I sucked the 230mL out, so it will be easy to see if it made some more. I now try to max it out (as far as rules allow during break in) in order to get it hot.

My hopes are that the engine did not take any damage from the overfilling done at the shop. Can't notice anything out of the ordinary though, yet.

Yes. During break-in, you will make some oil, so mid-way on the stick is the best starting point. After 10-20 hours of hard, hot running, you can then go closer to full.
