Tohatsu (Merc lightning) 40 to 50 conversion

Hello out there.

I have a 40 Mercury Lightning XL which I think is just a 3 cyl 2 stroke Tohatsu 42.5 cubic inch motor with mercury stickers. A friend told me that it could easily be converted to a 50. Is that accurate? If so, how??

It can be converted, but it's not cheap. New carbs, new exhaust pipe. And if you have an older one, new crank.
