Elvin's Theory of Outboards
An outboard is a propulsion device for a boat. It's not something to be used until the end of time. Your life my depend on it's ability to bring you back in one day. Consequently, I think that the day it's useful service life ends is the day it should be discarded. Some believe that 20, 30 or 40 year old engines are just reaching the point of being perfect. I think that if you are using the engine on a one acre pond that's fine. But I see way too many people with 10 year plus engines winding up dead because they trust them. Every month someone dies here on a boat with an older model engine because they trusted it to just go out a few miles into the Gulf. Obviously they make a series of mistakes to wind up dead, but the 15 year old brand X never left them stranded before....So says's their widow. I firmly believe that no brand of engine should be depended on after it's tenth birthday. Your engine is somewhere between 25 and 32 years old. Even if you could find the parts to keep it running I think you should ask yourself the all important question.
How Much Is My Life Worth?
Can it or sell it to someone who hasn't let go of that first penny they ever earned, but you should walk away and get something made in this century.
