Tohatsu M5b won't start

My M5b gradually lost power until it died. Then it would run for a minute and die. It will almost start but then backfires out the exhaust and won't even try after that. I have replaced the fuel, plug, coil and cleaned out the carb twice. Seems to be a timing problem but before I spend the change on a new CDI unit does anyone have any other ideas?

Your randomly changing out the parts is the most expensive method to finding the problem. You need to get a service manual and start testing the ignition system components to determine which one, if any are bad.

Since I didn't get any words of wisdom on this I decided to start a tear down and found a cracked head. Put a new head on and it runs great. Not bad for 70 bucks!

"start testing the ignition system components to determine which one, if any are bad."

The wisdom imparted to you was to NOT change out the CD without testing it first...
