Tohatsu M50D tilt/trim top seal replaceable?

Hi,

Does anyone know of a different make of top seal that will work in a Tohatsu M50D 3E3 #50597 outboard motor? Is the seal replaceable or is the rod guide-piston assembly pressed into one piece so it can't be done?

Thank you. Bob

The o-rings are replaceable on the ram, but thats it. You have to buy a 3C8773650M ram assy which retails for $294.60.

Elvin,

A Tohatsu mechanic called his parts people and he said there wasn't any seal put out by Tohatsu and I would have to spend the $300 to fix it.

By O'Ring I assume that is what you are calling the top seal. I see there are 3 which aren't labled in my manual.

Are you saying there are seals available somewhere that will work, and they are mistaken?

My mechanic suggested tearing it down and seeing if a seal from a different motor would work. He wouldn't guarantee anything though. What would you suggest? Thanks for your reply. Bob

The seal is not replaceable. The three o-rings are, as well as a few other parts off the ram. The ram assy has the seal on it so the $300.00 quote from the mechanic for the 3C877650M ram is correct. At worse case you have to replace the ram anyway, so trying to find a replacement seal that would fit it is not going to cost you anything. If you find something that works, let me know.

Elvin,

I guess I haven't made my question clear. Are you saying a seal could be put on, or the parts are pressed together so a seal cannot be put on? Have you worked on them before?

Bob

Re: Tohatsu M50D tilt/trim top seal replaceable?

The seal is still not replaceable. It is not designed to be replaced. Go back to my first response, " You have to buy a 3C8773650M ram assy which retails for $294.60." That does not mean that someone with a great deal of time and a machine shop could not take it apart, find a replacement seal somewhere and repair it. It just means that it is very unlikely that you will be able to replace the seal. We always replace the ram because it has never been worth the time to devise a way of repairing one.

Elvin

Thanks for your input. Since you asked me to let you know if I found a replacement seal, it got a little confusing.

You would think they could have designed it better.

Again thanks for the information. Bob

Elvin,

Will any adjustable spanner wrench work on the M50D rod guide cap with 1/4" pins? Will a propane torch get it hot enough? I came back and checked the posts and you made a believer out of me on haaving to replace the whole unit. Now I know.

Thanks.

The tool from Tohatsu is $298.00....I can't imagine why no one ever buys one. Anything that you can make fit will work.
