Tohatsu M50D oil /filldrain plug O-rings - source?

I need new O-rings for the oil fill and vent plugs for my Tohatsu M50D lower unit. Does anybody know of a source online? Also, I have a leak somewhere in the lower unit because the fluid is milky. I asked a guy here in town if he could check it out (no Tohatsu shops nearby) but he said he couldn't get parts. I assume if he took the lower unit apart to check for leaks that he would need a gasket set to reassemble. Does anybody know where I could get that online?

BTW, this guy also said I could run this motor for months with milky oil and it would be OK. Does that sound right?

Thanks for your help!
Brian

According to Lubedude on these boards, some (I said some) lower unit gear lubes can absorb 10% of their weight in water and still adequately protect the lower unit. Just passing on what I have read here- take it with a grain of salt.

Elvin here is the resident Nissan/ Tohatsu guru. He will be able to answer that parts question and get you pointed in the right direction for those parts and tell you what is needed.

Are you thinking that just the drain or fill plugs gaskets ( o-rings) are leaking or worse?

Thanks Z

I have no idea where the water is getting into the gear case but I doubt if it's the fill plug gaskets. But, the fill plug gaskets don't look very good and need to be replaced regardless.

It's just two flat gaskets that you can make yourself from gasket material available from any auto parts store and no, change the oil if it has any water in it. Gear oil is cheap....a lower unit is not. Does anyone really want to discover if they have a gearlube that can absorb up to 10% of water? What happens if you get 11%?....Change it and be safe.

After re-reading my post, I certainly didn't mean to imply that it was acceptable for their to be any moisture in the gear lube in the lower unit. I just stated that some of them will absorb water....and obviously that is not a good thing....hehe.

Not to restate the obvious, but someone might assume that the milky white/gray color of their gear lube would be ok for a while based on my post....ugh.

Elvin, I think he is wondering more about all of the o-rings and gaskets to completely rebuild the lower unit after a tear down.

Believe me, I've Googled for Tohatsu parts but I never found gasket sets. Lots of props, manuals, impellers, gas cans. I've never seen gasket sets. When I bought the motor used it was pretty beat up. The prop shaft was bent, skag busted, prop really beat up. I had somebody straighten the shaft (as much as he felt comfortable doing) but I would guess it's leaking around the prop shaft seal (if there is such a thing).

Since there are no dealers in my area I'm just going to change the gear case fluid once every couple months until winter. If I can't find a gasket set online I'll haul it out of state to a Tohatsu dealer and leave it with them to find and fix the leak.

I realize I should not have the leak but since I do, and I can't find somebody around here to fix it, I just wanted to know if I could keep using the motor with the lower unit leaking a little bit. I paid $2,500 for the motor with a 16' Zodiac RIB and trailer so I don't have much money in the thing.

No, you don't have to. But you could be a little nicer to stupid people like me.

I guess my question should have been - can anybody here recommend a particular online company where o-rings and gasket sets are available for my motor?

I've bought a couple of items from Elvin and his feedback on this forum has been VERY helpful. It sounds from his post that he sells these items but I wasn't aware of that. I will contact him.

Yes, you were nice enough to respond and I do appreciate that. This forum has really helped me with this old motor. I normally buy everything new but I just didn't want to invest much in a SCUBA dive boat and this Zodiac was really cheap so I jumped on it. The only problem I've had with the boat so far is a broken throttle cable. Water in the oil is bad (and I'd freak out if this was a nice motor) but the motor still runs good.

Yes, give Elvin a call or drop him a note. He can get you whatever you need.
