The motor works but the pump doesn't. Can the pump be repaired? Can it come off separately from the motor? I tried to remove the entire unit with a hand help propane torch with no luck. It has been in salt water. I do have a bigger torch but am concerned about getting it too hot and damaging the mount. About what will it cost? Any suggestions? I have tried turning the screw which should take the pressure off so raising it would be easier but it doesn't seem to help. Thanks. Bob

Depends on whether you have the old or new PTT system. Can you post some pics? Your issue could be as simple as a bad solenoid switch, or as complex as a bad pump... or anything in between. Are you saying that the pump motor is turning correctly? Is the fluid full?

No Title

I tried filling it but it leaks out the top. It's been a couple of years since I tried the motor but it was humming. Guess I'll have to put the battery back in and try it.

Looks like the old style unit. Depending on your serial number, the electric motor, and some parts are still available. Yes, you should get a battery connected and get some current symptoms for us to diagnose. They can be very difficult to remove when salt-corroded, especially after 20 years of corrosion. In some cases, you don't actually need to pull the complete unit.

Paul,

The motor runs fine. There is a power/manual screw on the port side that is supposed to relieve the pressure but it takes a lot of effort to tilt the motor up by hand. The only reference I have is from a Clymer manual and it started with year number 2000 where I believe mine is a 1990. The pump/motor is different then mine. I tried an angle grinder wrench in the cap holes but it didn't fit. I'm guessing an Oring in the top is leaking. I'll get the SN later if you need it.

It's an M50D 3e3 50597. I found a service manual online for this model, but at first glance it doesn't say how to fix one.

Is it full of ATF, or did the fluid leak out? If it's hard to tilt with the manual tilt screw open, odds are the mechanical bushings are rusted up.

It leaks out the top, probably from heat trying to get the cap off. It got jerky so I refilled it and tried to bleed it but it didn't work. Can it be fixed?

At this point, you will need to determine what parts are shot, and see whether they are available. Many are NLA. Exactly where is the leak? The push rod seals are NLA, so you may be looking for a used unit, dropping $2500 on a new unit, or scrapping the outboard.

It leaks where the push rod comes out of the pump. If the seals are shot than would taking the unit off make it easier to tilt the motor by hand? Would it kick up in reverse or is there a lock?

I thought a universal tilt trim unit cost $300 a few years ago. There is nothing wrong with the engine so no sense scrapping it. The motor can still be lifted up or down by hand. So what tool can I get the cap off with and what follows? Thanks.

If you just remove the TT unit, nothing holds the motor down in reverse, and nothing sets trim in forward -- it will be all the way down. A CMC PT-130 TT plate will set the motor back a few inches, and will cost over $700. OTOH, if you never change trim, you could gather the parts for manual TT, and convert to fully manual.

YES it probably can. I just repaired mine. Simple $22.00 in o-rings and seals. Open the bypass valve. Remove ram cap with spanner wrench. pull out assembly and the free piston assembly. Go to a large reputable hydraulic supply house and match all of the o-rings and wiper seal. Viola! Otherwise Tohatsu wants to charge $500 for the ram assembly et. al. The parts catalogue does not even show the small internal ram seal or the exterior wipe. That's the kind of B.S. that ought to be illegal in this country!
