Now that my OB seems to function correctly, I am considering the idea of adding a starter.
I see a " Starter Kit Part # 3C876300M " which sells in the range of $600.00

2 questions:
Does the kit come with the very basic of installation instructions?
Is there a less expensive alternative?

If I didn't want the alternator and rectifier, could I simply get a starter, marine push button
and a solenoid and forego the position sensor?
I know that's not the safest route to take, but it is less expensive.

Yes, you could supply your own solenoid and push-to-start switch, but you also need battery cables, bracketing, fusing, and of course the starter motor itself. I don't recommend aftermarket starter motors, as they tend to be poor quality in general.

No, the kit does not come with instructions. You are supposed to use the parts catalog and Factory service manual to do the installation.

Thank You Paul,
I do understand that aftermarket replacement parts are often of less than OEM quality.
Ebay has several used Hitachi starters and since my M25C2 has a starter, I
have some pretty hefty DC Welding leads as battery cables already.
I have the battery and fuel tank mounted in the front as counter balance weight
so that when I run by myself, the boat has weight in the front opposite the side I sit on.

I am going to ask the wife to get with Santa and see if a Starter Kit could be put on
my Christmas list. The problem is, I have had a Christmas gift already.
The Used 2002 M40D2 was $1350.00

Thank You For Your Time And Patience,
Lukus
