Re: Tohatsu information

Are you looking for 2 stroke, TLDI, or 4 stroke?

Nissan/ Tohatsu has a small but extremely loyal following. They have built their reputation by marketing extremely forgiving, reliable motors. The 2 strokes are very easy to work on.

If you have a good Nissan or Tohatsu dealer near you, it is a no brainer. You will almost never see a repair issue here due to a part failure. It is almost always owner neglect (lack of proper maintenance) or a fuel problem if you see a problem here.

You have different options in the 30 hp range compared to the 40 hp range. Personally, I absolutely love the 40 hp TLDI.

But you will have to give us more information such as what you want it to do and how you are going to use it (trolling vs. kicker vs. pushing a small fishing boat vs. pushing a pontoon or RIB). It also kinda depends on your budget.

Re: Tohatsu information

I own a 40 2 stroke(not the tldi) 2002 model. On the second year since I bought new. No complaints, runs well, starts easy, idles down ok for a 40, and plenty of push for my application. Since this is max application for my fishing boat, I can load 3 people, pull a couple kids in a tube with extra power left over. Fuel consumption is minimal as I usually run 3/4 throttle when moving around. Cruises 22mph, low 30's wide open, and will make you hang on when kickin it wide open from a troll Power trim standard makes a big selling point, not to mention on this model also has pull start on hood (even though electric start). Usefull when I killed my battery with electric trolling motor(one battery setup).
Oil injection, and winter fogging is the only reason for me to open the hood.
Not sure if this engine comes with compression
release for starting, but pull starts with half a easy pull.
I'd buy another because of price, dependability, ease of operation, and overall performance.
I'll let the dealer have it every second or third year for a tuneup, impellor. Depending on conditions and length of my use.

I may also suggest contacting Elvin (our resident Nissan/ Tohatsu Guru). He posts regularly here and is at:

http://www.internetoutboards.com/

He will have a ton of good advice for you. I have dealt with him personally and am quite impressed.

Boat is a 16 foot older Chrysler Bass boat, that we want to use for running a crabbing trot line, and some fishing in the river. Believe it had a 40 or 50 hspr on it originally.
Thanks,
Skip

Re: Tohatsu information

The 2 stroke 40 hp non-TLDI is what I have as well, 2002. Im on my second year with it and just hit 100 hours, no issues at all. As someone said earlier, it has a ton of power for the size of the engine- if you hammer the throttle at a troll the torque sends ya back pretty good!

Mine does not have a pull cord on the hood just electric start.

LOVE the motor, great on fuel about 4 gallons an hour wide open and at a cruise of 4000 rpms (22 mph on my boat) its great.

-John

Re: Tohatsu information

regaurding my post above: I should mention that my boat with, gear, motor, battery, and 2 people weigh about 1100 lbs. This should help for referance a bit to your application.
