I have a 2007 Tohatsu 9.8 The owners manual says you can use a flush fitting hooked to a garden hose after taking out a threaded plug in the lower unit to run the motor. I asked my dealer if he had the fitting and he said they never do this, Nissan/Tohatsu dealer training says to only run the motor on muffs. He said he could order the fitting if I wanted but he did NOT recommend I do this. He sold me a set of muffs:confused:

Re: Tohatsu Flush Fitting

Your dealer is correct. We normally use muffs on the 9.8.

On the 8/9.8, the muffs work faster and easier. The flush fitting works fine, but you have to tape off the inlet strainers if you use it. Otherwise, the flushing water runs out of the inlet strainers.

The flushing adapter threads into the motor at a plug that is identical to the LU lube plugs. The "hose" end of the fitting requires a raw hose end (cut off tubing) with hose clamp. Our shop uses one (primarily on larger motors), made up with about a foot of tubing. Our "kit" then has a hose-thread connector on it.

Thanks Paul, taping the inlets didn't sound like a very good idea anyway.

Can muffs be used on the Nissan 4 stroke 6HP?

Re: Tohatsu Flush Fitting

No, conventional muffs will not fit, because the water inlet in located on the underside of the ventilation plate.

So my only option is the fitting described above?

Thanks, Bobbo

No, the 4/5/6 is not setup to use the screw-in flush fitting. You need a barrel or test tank, just as with most very small OB's.

You sure? The owner's manual shows it uses the flush fitting. Maybe the smaller ones (2 or 3hp) don't. But the 4/5/6 does.

All of the 4-stroke models use the same flushing plug.

My error. The flushing adapter can be screwed into the underside of the powerhead on the 4/5/6.
