Well if you ask Tohatsu, the "ideal" oil is Tohatsu oil...of course :) . Seriously though, with a TLDI model, you do need to make sure you use an oil that is made for use in a direct injection system. If you use just some cheap oil you'll have problems with the DI. Tohatsu has a list of "approved" oils on their website (under the Tech Info, TLDI FAQ's section). Direct link: http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/tldi_faqs.html.

My dealer insisted that I use nothing but Pennzoil 100% synthetic oil in my 90tldi. I have for 3 seasons with no trouble.

Nothing wrong with the Pennzoil Synthetic. Oil questions on these boards are like a$$holes...everyone has an opinion. Personally, I am running Klotz in my TLDI. It runs extremely clean, smells good, and is a top notch synthetic. I have had previous success with Amsoil and Pennzoil, as well as Nissan/ Tohatsu oil from Cabellas. Running any premium synthetic will work fine. All of the previous noted oils will work great.

Of course oil threads are poison...someone will have an opposing view point....

I use Amsoil in my tohatsu, the Tohatsu oil was too smokey for me, combined with a bad local dealer made it an easy choice to go with an "aftermarket" oil.

Amsoil is top notch.
