Tohatsu Driveshaft Washer Question

I bought a used 2002 MFS9.9A Tohatsu outboard. I shows a thrust washer on the top of the drive shaft over the spline. When I took mine apart it is missing. Am I correct that this part goes on the top of the drive shaft and I assume keeps the drive shaft from jamming to far up when starting the motor?

Not sure on your motor, but typically that thust washer keeps the prop from pushing up on the splines and damaging them while the engine is in fwd gear.

The thrust washer is an expendable maintenance part and meant to take the wear and abuse.

Have you checked that the thrust washer isn't stuck inside the crankshaft splines?

The upper and lower thrust washers are for locating the floating driveshaft.

GA is correct. It could be stuck to the end of the crank.
