Well my motor wouldnt run unless it was at full throttle, so I bought a carb kit from internet outboards and installed it. It is acting the same way almost. It will start initially and run for about four seconds, then it will quit. It is similar to before the carb kit was installed. I have good spark and I know gas is pumping into the carb. There is only one thing i didnt do when I put the carb kit on. I didnt put in the new seat that the needle valve goes up into. The screw that holds the seat in place did not want to come loose and I didnt want to strip out the phillips head on the screw so I just put the new needle valve in the old seat. The carb looks brand new, I cleaned and cleaned it with a brush and carb cleaner and took all the components out and cleaned them. The dirtiest part was the tube that runs from the top of the carb clear down to the bowl. I cleaned it to look like new inside and out. Could my problem be the old seat or it there something elst that is causing this problem. I will have to choke it to start it and it will run for a few seconds. After it dies it will not start again until it has set for about 10 minutes. I am running out of ideas. HELP!!

Re: tohatsu carb/ engine dying

It very well could be that seat. If your motor won't run unless it's at WOT, that means you're probably getting too much fuel at lower rpms and have to open it up to clear out. When it dies 4 seconds after starting, it could be flooding...that's why it'll start again after a few minutes. If the seat isn't sealing, your float will be ineffective and fuel will continue to pour into the bowl and eventually cylinders (flooding)

Check your compression. If that's ok, go back to the fuel system and start over from the begining
