what size battery cables should be used on a 2003 tohatsu M40D2? i am converting to electric start and will be making cables out of marine grade bulk cable. leaning toward 6 gauge because battery will be right at motor, so cables will be short, but will go with 4 gauge if neccessary. thanks for your time, danny

Re: tohatsu battery cables

i did not buy complete kit. motor already had alternator so i bought rectifier kit. found used starter, solonoid, and main switch on e-bay. ordered neutral switch and as stated in original post was planning on making up battery cables out of bulk marine grade cables to save money, just wanted to use correct size for my engine. thanks for your time, danny

6 AWG for moderately short runs should be OK. I would recommend individually-tinned marine-grade cable, such as Ancor brand. Make 100% sure that your termination ends are perfect, and use adhesive-lined shrink tube to keep any corrosion at bay.

Make sure you use a GOOD battery with proper CCA per the owner's manual.
