Hi,

First post to the fourms.

I have done some searching for information on this engine and am coming up with nothing. A few little snipits that it is in the 1974 to 1978 age range, I think....

My questions are this: Would the manual located here
http://www.internetoutboards.com/partdetail.asp?id=579

cover this old girl off?

If not, where might I find some info on it. I really need to know what the gas/oil mix would be for it as well as the rest of the maintenance details.

This engine was my Grandpa's and I don't believe it would have been in any water for almost 20 years. I'd like to get it back into the water without wrecking anything.

The pull cord also won't catch when I pull it out so I'll have to check that out as well.

Thanks for any information in advance.

Re: Tohatsu B18c 12hp

A little update...

I emailed Tohatsu and they have no manuals for something this old. :(

He also indicated if the tag said that it was a B18C then it would be a 18HP engine not the 12 that I indicated. I guess somewhere along the line it had the top cover changed out!

Yea the model # would indicate 18 hp. Someone may have swapped the cover/decal to meet a restriction for a lake etc. ( Pretty common.) Don't be too bummed. Old two strokes are not hard to repair (once you find parts.) Even a different brand/generic 2 stroke manual will help with basics. These things were/are simple and suprisingly common in design. Spark, fuel and compression is all the need to run.

Update two.

I had also emailed Tohatsu in Japan, as that's where this engine was built. I recieved a reply with both the service manual and the parts manual attached to the email. :)

It actually is a 12HP engine. It's a 12hp Seahawk, why the B18c model who knows...

Bad news is they said there are no parts available except the waterpump. I hope all works well when I test it this weekend.

If anyone needs the manuals post and I'll get them to you.

Wee. Yes a two stroke is a basic engine. Not too worried about that. It was the drive end of things I was more worried about.

Re: Tohatsu B18c 12hp

Well great news.

I tested it out finally and after priming it up it started and ran fine after about two pulls. As much as a guy can test it in a 55 gallon drum it seams to be fine. I had a couple of small fuel leaks due to the gaskets drying out on the sediment bowl and one on the fuel pump but between tightening them a little bit and getting wet with the gas those problems went away.

Now it's time to hit the lake and go for a tour! :)

Hi Jason
I have recently aquired an old Tohatsu M12A - 1974-1980.
It seems in very good condition, bar a little bit of oxidation under the cowl.
I too have had no success in sourcing any manuals etc so if you would be so kind to give me a copy that would be great.
Otherwise can you supply the e mail of Tohatsu Japan and I will do the same as you did.
Many thanks

Re: Tohatsu B18c 12hp

the old tohatsu models were named after size in cubic centimers

the b18c had a 183cc block
the b18d also had the 183cc block but was rated at 10hp

the b18c and the m12a is basically the same except for an added thermostat and ac lighting outlet

If that old engine has the original impeller on it, check if pumping correctly, you wouldn't like to have an overheat issue in middle of lake.

Re: Tohatsu B18c 12hp

know this is a old thread but I've got the exact same boat outboard and need parts for my pull start. Was hoping the original poster would see this and ema me a service and operators manual. The motor works 100 percent and is a shame to just throw it out. Mint cond that!
any other tips to find parts for this motor would be great
