Tohatsu and saltwater

I am leaning heavily towards getting a Tohatsu 50hp. I fish 80% saltwater flats, and have read that some are having corrosion problems with the tohatsu around salt.

Anybody got experience with this?

Yes, I do. It's a complete load of crap. Usually it's someone on a forum who "had a friend, who's uncle's, wife's, sisters's, brother's, dentists, cousin saw a Tohatsu once". There is zero difference from brand to brand as to corrosion issues. In the end it always come down to electrical activity in the water and condition of the anode(s) on the engine. There used to be a difference years ago and the best at that time was OMC. Today they are all the same:)

The motors that they sell in other parts of the world are the same as they sell in Japan. Since they don't have a whole lot of fresh water boating in Japan, they (and any other brand from Japan) build their motors primarily for use in saltwater from the get-go.

As long as you take care of them (flush w/ fresh water, etc), you won't have any problems.

What the GURU said, I did alot of research before I got my 90 TLDI and had run across some comments about corrosion issues and on further investigation found that it was all B.S.
