It depends on which h.p. (model) you're referring to. When a model is first produced it's version "A". If a major modification is made, it changes to version "B", etc. If a minor modification is made, it'll go to "A2", "A3", etc. So it really depends which hp/model you're wanting to know the difference between.

I assume your model is MD40A (the TLDI model). As far as I know the difference between the MD40A and the current MD40B has something to do with an ECU (the "brain" of the motor) upgrade. Not sure what exactly the new "B" model ecu did that the "A" model didn't. Also Tohatsu changed their colors from a gray color to the new dark blue color and that may have factored into their model # change as well.

I was digging around through my paperwork last night and spotted it. It said MD40B. You're right though, my motor is black with blue stripes and white lettering.
