Looking at 88 and 99 Tohatsus. Was ther a model change that would make a newer model a better choice?

Re: Tohatsu 9.9-9.8; differences 88 to 04?

The 9.9 2-stroke was a detuned 15 hp. The 9.8 2-stroke was a design built 9.8 that was also available as a detuned 8. Completely different designs. The 9.9 was 81 lbs and the 9.8 was 56 lbs. The advantage to the 9.9 was that it could be converted to a 15 for less than $20.00. The advantage to the 9.8 was that you could walk around with it without hurting your back.

TG is right, both 2 strokes 9.9 and 8 are detuned 15 & 9.8 HP respectively, both weights the same 41 Kg so does 8 & 9.8, 26 Kg. So why buy less power for same given weight. 9.9/15/18 HP will probably break your back.

Re: Tohatsu 9.9-9.8; differences 88 to 04?

A question to the Nissan fans. I am new to gas motors as I have only used electrics for my 11ft aluminum cartopper. I have a chance to buy a 2003 9.8hp Nissan but I'm not familiar with it nor acan I find alot of info about them. I like the idea of the 56lbs weight.

Can anyone please pass on any info positive or negative about this motor.

Thanks in advance ..... and go easy on me as I'm a rookie in the outboard world.

A 2 stroke I presume. If so, they're horrible!

Give me the name and address of the person who would try to sell you such a thing so that I can chastise him.

If this is your personal light non technical opinion, can you give the Internet auditorium a more extensive opinion on your stated dissatisfaction with the model including the brand. One dissatiisfied customer is just another sand grain on the beach. Being Tohatsu the builder to Nissan, Mercury & Mariner, all reputed brands your post is very mean and confussing to new non experienced boaters.

This 2003 model is the same current 2008 model.

YUP - trite, one-liner non-answers do absolutely NOTHING to help newcomers looking for real assistance! :(

And BAD, totally WRONG info, is nearly criminal!

Its a JOKE! Lighten up guys, I'm looking for the same exact motor. It's pretty easy to figure out; I started the thread.

Perhaps not so funny to a newby who takes the comments seriously - as the guy asking for help did:

Kidding, comments made to be humorous, is what the :D:D:) are for...;)

I sure did not take it in a humorous way as it you did not come off at all as being funny.....

Anyway does anyone have any constructive comments about this motor...good or bad.

Thanks in advance.

I think it is THE choice for someone who wants 10 hp but has to carry their motor. The power of a 10 with the weight of a 6. I have a Tohatsu 3.5 that is the easiest starting motor I have ever seen. Only downfall is that parts aren't stocked indefinitely like some of the older Johnson/Evinrudes. Seriously, If you are going to pass on it, I'm interested. PM me.

GOB, the Tohatsu 9.8 2-strokes are prized for their light weight. All the other brands offered a 9.9hp that was a de-tuned 15hp and therefore was quite heavy in comparison. Tohatsu took their 8hp and bumped up the h.p. on it and sold it as a 9.8hp which allowed them to keep the weight down. Pretty much all small 2-strokes are bullet proof and the Tohatsu is no exception. Keep up with some very simple/basic maintenance and it'll last you a lifetime. The 9.8hp 2stroke is still being produced for sale in other countries but due to EPA emission regulations, are no longer for sale in the USA. Parts should not be a problem though since they are still being manufactured for sale in other parts of the world.

Alleluya then !!

Still confussed over the models "The power of a 10 with the weight of a 6" 6-8 & 9.8 are 170 CC, 26 KG, 9.9 (10 in some countries) & 15 HP, are 250 CC, 41 Kg. So if looking for portability & performance go for the 9.8 - 9.9 is a 15 Kg heavier story :)

If having problems with Tohatsu spare parts, buy direct from them, good prices/delivery service. Stock parts you think are necesarry specially near summer. If the model is in current production like all 2 strokes are no prob, besides, these engines have reached the top and will not evolve further, like next line: TLDI or 4 strokes their bigger evolved brothers.

GOB, those links are to a couple of Tohatsu/Nissan dealers. The actual websites for Nissan & Tohatsu are www.tohatsu.com and www.nissanmarine.com

T Guy is right, anyway you will be directed to contact/buy from a authorized Tohatsu/Nissan dealer in tour area. The main links are just for US, Canada & International Dealers, won't sell you a nut, don't waist your time writing them it's useless.
