Hi, I have an older Tohatsu 9.8hp 2 stroke outboard and recently, it's started to have problems. While running at WOT, the motor will randomly over rev and slow the boat right down until I release the throttle. I can only really compare it to dipping the clutch in a car whilst accelerating as I don't know much about outboards? Thanks

Try a new or different prop. It is a good chance that the rubber shock hub in the prop is shot. Same happened to my 18E with the original stock prop, and then three years latter with the replacement (nissan).

An easy way to check it is to get a permanent marker and make a mark across the hub to the outer aluminum section. run the engine until it wildcats, pull the prop off, see if the line is still lined up. if it has moved...time to buy a new prop.
