Tohatsu 9.8HP - Overfilled Oil

I've been having problems with my Tohatsu 9.8HP stalling out, usually after running for 5-10 minutes - enough to get me from the dock to the middle of the lake! After the initial run, restarting the motor became increasingly difficult as it would either rev up and stall almost immediately or run for only a minute getting. I initially inspected the fuel filters and replaced the fuel hose which did not help.

Another symptom I found later was oil leaking or spraying out of the air silencer and dripping into the cowl. Somehow I had managed to overfill the engine oil reservoir by 3-4 oz. I drained the excess oil and changed the very fouled spark plugs which seemed to help - although not completely.

My question is this -- will the excess oil clear itself out eventually, or is there something else I need to do? Also, what is inside the air silencer - does that need to be cleaned out?

Thank you for your help!

Re: Tohatsu 9.8HP - Overfilled Oil

Over a period of time it will work it's way out of the engine, but it would be better for you to pull the spark plugs, drain the carburetor and pull start the engine 20 times with the kill switch lanyard removed. This serves several purposes:

1) It will drain the oil out of the carburetor.

2) It will remove the oil from the combustion chamber.

3) It will punish you for overfilling it in the first place. You will never do that again will you ? :)
