Tohatsu 9.8 tiller install and cost??

Does anybody have a rough idea what it would cost to convert a 2005 Tohatsu 9.8 HP remote to tiller steering? I have my eye on one but it would have to be converted? Part? labor? Thanks much. BP

Need to buy complete steering handle, assorted parts that secures handle to front pan and 2 internal throttle cables. Very straightforward to assembly, download a on line parts manual and follow assembly diagrams, could save some $$$ on hand labor if doing by yourself.

We need your correct model (year is irrelevant for servicing). Assuming you have an MFS9.8A3, the steering portion is shown in the parts diagram below. You will also probably want to convert the electrics for the starter, etc., back to on-the-motor, instead on in the RC box,so yiur list of needed parts will grow.

You may also need to convert to on-baord shifter, as opposed to having everything at the RC box. Here is the parts diagram for the shifter:

In many cases, this type of conversion is not cost-effective. If you can firm-up whether you only want to convert the steering, or also the electrical and shift, along with your precise model, we can give you an idea of the work involved.

In addition, you would either need to come up with a way to activate the electric choke solenoid, or replace the carburetor for a manual-choke type. (The 2 carns have completely different choke setups, and are not interchangeable). The rough parts list looks like this:

And you will need a couple of hours to retrofit everything. At, $85 an hour (our shop rate), I expect you would be much better off financially to sell the Remote motor and buy a tiller version.

Paul. Wow what a great answer. I appreciate it. Are you a outboard mechanic in the Buffalo area? Im not too far from there. You are right, I think I would be better off getting a tiller.

Yes, out shop is in the Black Rock section of Buffalo. We do a couple of conversions from tiller to remote each year, but only when there's a very good reason.
