I'm looking at buying a new engine but I want a engine that can get me to 18 to 20mph in my Porta-Bote. How fast do you think the Tohatsu 9.8 HP 4 stroke will push my 14 foot Porta-Bote? With 400lbs in it. Or will I need 15hp to get it. Right now I have a 7hp Eska and it only gets me 2 to 3 mph. I want to make sure I make the right choice before buying a engine.

Very likely. I have a 13 ft alum boat with 60 in beam. Boat weighs 160. WIth me, full tank, battery, oars, and a little wight in the bow, that's not quite 400, but close. I've clocked 19.8 on the GPS at WOT and about 17.5 at half throttle. With more weight, i.e., 450 to 500, 16 mph is easy at 3/4 throttle.

Keep in mind your boat has a max HP rating of 9.8 and motor weight of 83 lbs. A 15 HP, esp in 4 stoke, is too much HP and weight for that boat.

BTW, I'm very pleased with my 9.8.

Thanks for the reply Docksider. I know the 15hp 4 stroke is to heavy I was thinking the 15hp 2 stroke since it is lighter weight and keep my wrist out of it but the 9.8 seems to be good enough and more fuel efficient then a 2 stroke also I won?t be polluting the water with 4 stroke.

Best thing to do is call Sandy Kaye, President of PB and ask him.
