I have a 2004 Tohatsu 9.8 HP 4 stroke. It runs fine at mid to high speed, but runs on one cylinder when run at idle for more than a minute or so. If I pull out the choke briefly then push it back in it runs on both cylinders for a few seconds then goes back to one again. I've tried pumping the fuel line bulb but that doesn't help. I have disassembled and cleaned the carb a number of times. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It sounds like a fuel system problem. Take it into a dealer and let them determine what part of the system is causing the problem.

Thanks for the response Tohatsu Guru. I tried that, which I should have mentioned in my first post. I went to a dealer in Florence SC, I believe they are called Sammys Marine. They charged me 150$, did not replace any parts but said they cleaned the carb, suggested I put alcohol or some fuel drier in the fuel. The engine had the same problem when I got it back.

Not to be trite, but try another dealer or take it back to them. Your alternative is to open a service manual and go through everything on the engine.

I think I might be having a similar issue, I just bought a brand new 2010 9.8. It will start up and idle fine, however if I rev it up ( either in natural or in gear ) then bring it back down to idle it will sometime stall out. But then if I pull it it will start up again and idle just fine. I don?t understand what the problem is, like I said it only does it sometime, and sometime it seems just fine. Doesn?t seem to matter if its warmed up or not, I can take if for a half hour ride and it might stall out when idling back to the dock. The only time it shows any problem is when I throttle back to idle, anything above idle speed and it runs like a Swiss watch. Its not a huge issues because its still under warranty, but it is something easy like a carb adjustment I would just assume take care of it myself.

If you are pushing over 1500 lbs it may just be the idle adjustment screw on top of the carb. When the engines are test run at the factory or dealership thay cannot take into account every load, current, etc., so some tweaking by the owner for the individual application, while underway, is normal.

It's unlikely that it is the setting. It's more likely that a piece of trash has wound up in the low speed jet or that you have a pin hole in the fuel system. I would run it by a warranty station even though it is a PIA. It's always best to document a problem.
