My owners manual say's that you can take a plug out of the lower unit, screw a flush fitting in that hook's to a garden hose and run/flush the motor.
When I went to my dealer and asked him if he had the fitting he said "no,no,no" don't do that, use muffs. Any opinions?

I have the flush fitting for my 4hp. Just got it today so haven't used it yet. There's a bolt just next to the water outlet under the body of the motor where the flush adapter goes. Not sure about the larger motors but on the smaller Tohatsu's the intake is such that muffs won't work.

The 8/9.8 can use muffs very well. It's how I do my personal motor. If you do use a flushing adapter, you will also need to tape off the inlet screens, or the flush water will run out of the inlets.

The 4/5/6 cannot use conventional muffs, as the inlet screen is on the underside of the ventilation plate.
