Hello, Looking for an engine for my inflatable and this hopped-up version of the 8hp. 2 stroke, (at 9.8HP but still a 169cc engine), looks interesting vs. its heavier 9.9,15cc and 18 larger 247/294cc brothers.
I'm in Guatemala right now and not sure I can even get one, although it appears that these small block 9.8's are sold internationally.
Can anyone give some insight on these engines?

Thanks in advance.
Ron

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke 169cc engine

Sorry for delayed response.
The engine sounds like a perfect match for our Avon 340 Air Floor boat, but have not found any in Guatemala. Could not find them in US either, and then I'd have customs and shipping to add to the cost. Generally, are they available, are they a composite of extra parts Tohatsu is marketing to get rid of excess parts, and a general question that really does matter-are the engines available outside of the US, inferior to engines marketed in the US. The warrantee in the US is 2 years, yet only 6 months down this way. It seems some evenrude parts have to come from the states and not available here has led those cruising these waters to question wether outboards are standardized.
Thanks again,
ron

In general, small 2-stroke engines cannot be sold in the U.S. due to EPA regulations...So, you will not see them for sale here. As most of the rest of the world knows that 4-stroke outboards are an impractical choice you will find that many manufacturers have retained their production lines for models in third world countries. The closest distributor to you can be found by going to the Tohatsu international website at www.tohatsu.com. Outboards are, in general, standardized within model types. Model availability is determined by regional demand and regulation. Warranties....Are based on marketing and expense calculations. I wouldn't read anything into what the warranty is in one country versus another.
