Tohatsu 6hp Sailpro driveshaft, lower unit cover repair

Hi, did some driveway demolition on my 2014 Tohatsu 6hp Sailpro. Bought it new for $1,600, little used, 20 hours in five years. Cracked it at the top of the lower unit by the forward bolt and bottom of the shaft housing right above the lower unit. See pictures. Dealer says internal stuff is fine but will cost $950.00 (half labor, half parts) to replace the outer housings.

My questions are: 1. Is this a DIY project for someone with limited wrench skills? 2. Is it possible to fix this by weld repairing the cracks? 3. Or should I sell as is and start over with a different used motor?

Can be a DIY project, it's not that difficult to drop that lower leg if mechanically inclined, have it welded by someone who know his job well and save money....

Yes the parts can be welded.----But the exhoust housing may well be bent !!-------So how are you going to make sure that the lower unit will still be LINED UP with the powerhead.------Best to install new parts.

If damaged parts are welded back well in same place from where originally were ripped off, alignment should be spot on. It's the boater's choice if welding or going for new costly parts. If it would be my motor, the welding option at my own risk.

That's an assumption you don't know about, broken as in pics is one thing, bent it's a different story..

Oh well-----Time will tell I guess.--------If crank splines wear too quickly or driveshaft snap from flexing.------Then the housing was bent.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but did you just crack the housing extension (#16 in the pics Paul provided)?? If so, that would be the easiest fix. If it's either of the other two housings (driveshaft housing or lower unit) then it's a bit more complicated but certainly could be a DIY. If you have **no** mechanical skills then provide the drinks and food for a friend that does have some.
