Just picked up a new 2017 Tohatsu MFS50AETL 4-Stroke 50HP outboard, do any of you know if the alternator on these can be upgraded? It seems like people on other outboards have cut out part of the cover to put an automobile alternator on, but does anyone know of a less janky/more safe method? I do have a honda eu2000 generator I'm going to put on the back log if no alternator is available. I am looking for about 60 amps minimum. The boat will be running at 1/3-1/2 throttle most of the time and will need about 20amp draw.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard.

It already has a 21 amp alternator to satisfy the 20 amp draw. What is all the juice for?

Sounds system and lights is about a 46 amp draw @ max( I assume 20A would be a good ouput to keep the 3 batteries charged, but I only plan to operate around 1/3-1/2 throttle most of the time so I dont think I would get the full 20A of the stock alternator most of the time

a few things to note

altering your motor voids your motor warranty

putting a constant 46 amp draw on batteries is a fast way to shorten the battery life

trying to dump 20 amps or more into the batteries will shorten the battery life.

the architecture of the battery determines its maximum discharge and charge rates.

your stock alternator will give you a full 20 amps as long as the motor is over 2000 RPM

you dont boat 24 hours out of the day. so do like most bass fisherman do with their 36 volt trolling motor setups and use a shore charger. (its better for the batteries than charging with an alternator)

If you need that much power, you need a genset. Modifying the top end to install a separate alternator and regulator will void the warranty, and may cause premature wear on the upper main bearing.
